Nomadland: All wander, no destination?

Hollywood and Cancel Culture
What happens when an artist, filmmaker, or performer gets caught in a serious indiscretion. Is it still okay to love their art? What are the ethics of this situation? And is it okay to “cancel” an artist for their stupid, insensitive but not illegal remarks? We don’t pretend to have the answers, just a lot of questions.

Kara McDowell Again!
We don’t often have guests come back for a second visit, but then again we don’t often know people who get published for a second time. Kara talks about the challenges and joys of writing for Young Adult readers and offers a little insight on her latest book for Scholastic, One Way or Another.

What makes iconic scenes iconic?
Let’s face it, due to recent events, it’s hard to talk about anything else. The storming of the capitol got us to thinking about why those visuals struck such a cord? What will turn out to be the most iconic images from that day? Why are Washington landmarks so often used as the backdrops of popular movies?

Biopics: History or Art?
Biopics: History or Art?
Some biopics cleave to true history and the movie suffers for it. Other biopics set out to “say something”and true history suffers. Is there a balance? What do filmmakers owe to the dead and the living?

About Story Babble
Meet The Hosts
Brian Nissen
Co-Host
Mark Arnett
Co-Host
Mark earned his way through college performing magic for corporate parties as Arnett the “Not Too Bad.” It was mostly an excuse for comedy, but it did include an escape from a large trunk. However, after graduating from law school at Arizona State University, Mark stopped doing magic outside the bedroom. Instead, Mark practices law with his brother Wayne at Arnett & Arnett, P.C. in Chandler, Arizona helping people who have been ripped off by their insurance company. But Mark has always kept his hand in entertainment. Whether that’s performing in a rock band, making a feature-length award-winning documentary (Baby Boomerang), or producing stage and screen projects with Brian. Mark is currently working on a novel, a screenplay, a TV pilot, and a music video, but his latest “completed” project is an album of original songs entitled “Sugar Cubes.” As Mark puts it, “I have an addiction to creativity. I can’t seem to stop myself. I even dream of pulling the old trunk out of the garage and seeing if I can still escape.”
